This house was
slated to be demolished to make way for a new subdivision off of Youth-Jersey
Road. Dr. Barrett and his wife raised 10 children in the house. One
of their daughters, Martha Elizabeth, married Will Gunter of The Gunter House,
presently Gunter Hall which is owned and managed by the Historic Preservation
Society of Social Circle, Inc.
The house was moved to it’s current location by the Great Granddaughter,
Mary Jo Whitley. The house is constructed of hand-hewn timbers and site-made
brick, with Heart of Pine throughout. The Whitley’s have strong
ties to many long time Social Circle families; the Gunter's, Stanton's, Spearman
and Whitley’s. Thanks to Ms. Whitley’s dedication to preserving
history, you are able to tour the house today. This house has not been
on tour before.
