GIBBS POND
c. 1915 - 1919
Address - 1018 Justin Circle
Current Owner - Carole Reese
Discovered completely
overgrown in Corby Creek subdivision in 1999, the pool has been converted
into a sunken garden by its owner, Carole Reese. The pool is fed by
several springs and was originally a swimming hole. It was part of the
property owned by the Gibbs family whose home still stands on Hightower Trail.
The pool was bricked sometime between 1915 and 1919 using bricks brought from
a Rutledge cotton oil mill which had burned. It was then opened to the
town and admission was a nickel. The pool also boasted a bath house
where the church potting shed now stands. The old steps from the bath
house to the pool are still visible. In addition to its recreational
function, the pool was used for baptisms and the main spring was one of two
that supplied water to the City of Social Circle.
The area was cleared in the summer of 2000 and the garden was begun. As with all gardens, it remains a work in progress. Most plantings are native to Georgia and the South and are named and marked.
