Bob and Dena's Garden

Gibbs-Burton-Herndon-Rogers-
Bertram-Bailes/Johnston Garden

309 West Hightower Trail
Current Owners - Bob Bailes and Dena Johnston

Once an open lot, the side yard has been developed into a garden pond and pool area.  The front of fence perennial gardens and pool side gardens are only three years old, but will continue to fill in each year.  The left side of the house is flush with native azalea's and Camellias that had been unattended for many years.  The Spring time brings beautiful pink azalea blooms laced with white dogwoods and purple wisteria dripping from the ancient Oak.  Wander the full grounds to find the secret back garden.

The Bailes/Johnston house (c. 1836) is one of Social Circle's first.  In 1840, it was deeded by the Gibbs family to the Burtons. Mr. Isaac Anderson Stanton, Sr. moved his family into the house and added the upstairs, outside columns, and included stained glass windows going up the stairway in about 1895.  The Day, Duval, Stanton, and Herndon (Mrs. Herndon was Eula Knox) families also resided in the house.  It is said SHERMAN'S soldiers camped under the front oak trees during their "March to the Sea."
